Zooba

Zooba

Zooba has been getting a lot of press lately. A video responding to the naysayers who don’t want to pay LE 8 for a sandwich has been doing the rounds on the internet, and its #slightlysmallerzooba campaign has also been a talking point. In my opinion, the naysayers are right on this one: the recent changes to the menu and the exorbitant prices are frustrating and disappointing. Why does good food, made with cheap ingredients, have to be so expensive?

When Zooba first opened it was heralded as a pioneer. They made ful and ta3meya cool again. They embraced what they called the ‘Egyptian creative spirit’ and started a trend that saw sha3by food take over the city’s dining scene. But they’ve let the success go to their head, and no matter how fresh their fava beans are, there’s no way a plate of ful should ever cost LE 12.

We visited the original Zamalek branch for a mid-week lunch. Despite the small seating area – the Maadi branch beats them by a long way on this front – the place wasn’t full and we found a seat. Deciphering the menu took a while, there are now all sorts of funny additions you can have with your meal, and by the time we ‘chose our protein’, ‘added some greens’ and worked out what a ‘sakalans’ was, a good quarter of an hour had passed and tummies were rumbling.

The food came quick enough, though I was disappointed to see they’ve replaced the rather twee white metal bowls with the rather more run-of-the-mill silver ones you get from the 3arabeyat ful. I had to ask – twice – for a fork, and despite it only being mid-afternoon, two of the salads we had asked for were unavailable. Between us we ordered Moussaka (tasty but small), chips (delicious, but served in a strainer?), cherry tomato salad (more onion than tomato), wholegrain koshary (nothing to write home about) and a rice and banana milk pudding (two spoonfuls in a jar). The bread, in its spinach and beetroot variations, remains a nice touch but on this occasion we were only given the plain stuff.

Zooba’s food doesn’t leave you thirsty from the salt, nor does it inflict the fullness that comes with a ful sandwich on the street. But nonetheless its portions are small and expensive – there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. Wouldn’t it be nice to eat freshly made, traditional yet quirky Egyptian food for a price that doesn’t break the bank? Perhaps there’s another niche in the market there….

What’s hot:

–          The food doesn’t come swimming in oil
–          There are a lot of vegan/vegetarian/dairy-free/gluten-free options on the menu and the wholegrain koshary (with less cumin, and more tomato sauce) could be a real innovation
–          The beetroot/spinach bread

What’s not:

–          It’s overpriced
–          The waiters seem distracted, more interested in having fun with each other than their customers
–          The Zamalek seating area is really uninviting – the Maadi branch is much nicer

Were it not for the double figures on the menu, Zooba would take a solid 7. But alas, they’re only getting a 6.

Overall rating: 6/10
